Trends in Japan’s Generative AI: Insights from the Large Language Model Swallow

Large language models (LLMs) have evolved from chatbots that can respond to a wide range of queries into artificial intelligence systems capable of coding and tool use that require complex reasoning. Their applications are rapidly expanding, extending into fields such as embedded systems and robotics. In this talk, I will introduce Swallow, a large language model developed by Institute of Science Tokyo and National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), while providing an overview of the latest trends in generative AI research and development in Japan. I will also discuss the current state and challenges of Japan’s unique initiatives in this area.
