“Can AI Data Centers Thrive in Japan?
— A Data Center Operator’s Perspective on the Requirements for Next‑Generation Infrastructure —”

The rapid adoption of generative AI is driving a global surge in the construction of AI data centers. In North America and Europe in particular, hyperscale AI data centers designed for large‑scale power consumption are being developed at an unprecedented pace. In contrast, there is ongoing debate over whether this same model can be applied directly in Japan, where constraints related to power supply, land availability, cost structures, and societal acceptance present significant challenges. In this session, I will revisit the concept of AI data centers as critical infrastructure for society and industry, drawing on the latest developments and trends observed in overseas markets. Based on Japan’s unique infrastructure conditions and characteristics, I will analyze—from the perspective of a data center operator—the roles and strategic directions that data centers must pursue in the age of AI.
